Christmas Comes To Sutton This Week
We've Got You Covered With All The Christmas and Non-Christmas Related Events

Good morning Royal Sutton Coldfield,
Welcome back to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that still writes to you when jet lagged.
That’s right, I’m off on my travels in Thailand this week and next with work related internet stuff, but that doesn’t mean we don’t deliver.
I mean, I picked a bad week to go away as there’s so much happening in Sutton Coldfield this week - and it is officially the week that Christmas comes to town with lights being switched on and community events large and small all taking place.
Not sure when they are or where to go?
That’s why you subscribe to this email, and don’t worry, as always I’ve got you covered (with a lot of help from Laura)
Let’s take a look at what’s going on this week…
SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
Jubilee Garden
You may have driven past Jubilee Garden on your way in and out of Sutton town centre and never ventured inside. If that’s you, then you are missing out!
Jubilee Garden isn’t your average coffee shop, the decor is very simple and crisp, almost Scandinavian in style. They offer a range of freshly prepared dishes which are beautifully presented on cute handmade ceramics in all shapes and sizes. My all time favourite dish is their smoked salmon open toast, the salmon is naturally oak smoked with chamomile, delicately cured with juniper, tellicherry pepper & citrus. Absolutely delicious!
For those with a sweet tooth, there are also plenty of homemade cakes and treats on offer with amazing flavour combinations such as Thai Tea Basque Cheesecake and Fresh Fig & Earl Grey Cream Cake.
If like me you are a matcha lover, they do great matcha lattes, made from high quality matcha by Marukyu-Koyamaen and also a Japanese matcha roll cake. Coffee connoisseurs will appreciate their range of pour over speciality coffees on offer alongside the normal lattes and flat whites.
Everything they have to offer is carefully sourced and prepared lovingly with great attention to detail.
They also sell wine by the bottle and run events such as wine tasting evenings and craft workshops. Their next upcoming event is a Christmas card and wine workshop on 4th December at 7pm.
WHAT’S ON
Christmas Arrives In Sutton Coldfield This Week
This week marks the beginning of a host of Christmas events across Sutton Coldfield. Yes, we might be well over a month away from the big day, but the countdown begins now and there are some great events across the whole of Sutton Coldfield taking place over the coming days.
Sutton Town Centre has their Christmas light switch on tonight which coincides with the beginning of the free parking and travel scheme and then on Saturday it’s all eyes on Boldmere as they have a 5 hour event lined up on Sunday that includes their Christmas lights switch on.
The Boldmere Christmas Festival includes a full roster of entertainment and there are plenty of rides, stalls and street food to enjoy. It all kicks off at 1pm and the big switch on will take place at around 5.15pm. More details here for the Boldmere Christmas Festival.
The Streetly Community Christmas Fayre is taking place this Sunday 17th November 11am until 3pm at their centre on Foley Road East.
Why not head along and get in the spirit nice and early. Adults £3 and kids under 12 FREE. Includes Santa’s Grotto & lots of Festive Fun.
There’s also a Christmas market at Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club on Saturday 3 - 7pm - so take your pick.

LOCAL NEWS
Lap Up This New Menu At Sip & Slice
Sip and Slice made a big announcement last week that they are now serving breakfast, lunch and lite bites in addition to their pizza menu.
Since Sip and Slice opened it has become my favourite place to grab a coffee and a sweet treat while walking around Sutton Park. It’s location is perfect with views out across Bracebridge Pool.
They are now offering folded flat breads for breakfast filled with sausage and bacon or mushroom and tomatoes for veggies. They also have winter wood-fired bowls which contain anything from Mac & Cheese to Cottage Pie alongside wood-fired folded subs with some great fillings such as pepperoni, N’duja, red onions and jalapenos. Sounds tasty!
You can order your food at the counter and sit on the lakeside benches or on the Bracebridge terrace. After placing your order you will be given a pager to alert you when your food is ready.
I haven’t manage to visit since the changes last week but can’t wait to get down there and give the new menu a try!

LOCAL SPORT
Results & Upcoming Games
FOOTBALL:
Sutton Coldfield Town FC continued their poor away form that sits in complete contrast to their home form with a 2-0 defeat at Long Eaton United on Saturday.
The Royals will be glad of a return to Coles Lane this weekend where they are so far unbeaten this season and look to put a halt to the 4 successive defeats they’ve endured in recent weeks on the road.
Boldmere St Michaels have leapfrogged their neighbours in the league enjoying back to back 1-0 wins, last weekend at the expense of Sporting Khalsa.
This Saturday they have a tough trip to Worcester City who currently sit third in the league, but a win for The Mikes could see them climb to a top 6 position.
HOCKEY:
Life in the Vitality Women’s National Hockey League Premier Division has been tough for our Women’s First XI and was no easier last weekend as they were toppled 5-0 away at Hampstead & Westminster. This weekend they face fourth placed Surbiton.
Another five goal thriller for the men last weekend but again they were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline at home to Stratford. This weekend they face Bournville & Kings Heath in a crucial mid table clash.

Sutton Coldfield Society Of Artists
Last week I attended the Autumn exhibition for this group of local artists and was blown away by the amazing art work that was on display.
The SCSA was set up over 70 years ago to promote and encourage art in Sutton Coldfield. They are a friendly group who would be delighted to welcome new artists of all abilities. They meet up once a month on Saturdays at The Methodist Church Centre on South Parade for practical art sessions and demonstrations. In the summer months they get out and about for outdoor sessions and gallery visits.
It’s a very relaxed group, you can stick to the set themes or choose your own, work in any media that you prefer and stay for however long you want.
Above all they offer a space for like-minded people to discuss artwork, exchange ideas, share information on materials and methods and hopefully make some new friends along the way.
If you are interested in joining or fancy going to one of their demonstrations click here to visit their website.

SUTTON SOLVER
Welcoming The Return Of The Sutton Solver
Do you know the answer to this week’s Sutton Solver? If you do, hit reply and let us know for a chance to feature next week.
Q - In 1762 the population of Sutton Coldfield was approximately…
Was it: a) 1200 b) 1800 c) 3500
Answer to last week: Last week the quickest person to answer was Malcolm Robinson (after just 3 mins!!!) who told us that Birmingham was connected to Sutton Coldfield by rail in 1860. Although this one did cause a bit of controversy as Ray Beech emailed us to tell us it was in fact 1862 according to data from Sutton Coldfield History Research. Thanks Ray for clearing that up and I have invited him to give us more details.
