Good morning Royal Sutton Coldfield,
Welcome to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that thinks three celebrity chef’s at a food festival is still not enough… (we are spoilt I know).
This week brought the surprise news that Brewhouse in the Town Centre closed without notice, and although we don’t yet know who the property has been sold to and we are saddened to see it’s Sutton inspired beverages such as Sixsmith IPA and 004 Oaks fizzle away - we are hopeful that the new owners (who are yet to be announced) will bring a further boost to the Royal Town when it re-opens in its new format.
There’s no need to dwell on it for too long though as this weekend you can head in to Sutton Town Centre full of optimism, as the largest Sutton Coldfield Food Festival ever is taking place over Saturday and Sunday (more details on that below).
Finally, before I get in to the good stuff, just a massive thank you from me for continuing to support via liking, sharing, commenting and emailing me with your support, ideas and general feedback about the Sutton Insider newsletter.
We continue to grow and that is thanks to you.
Right, enough… I can’t take any more. Let’s get in to this week’s news…

This Curious Play Opens Tonight For 2 Weeks
You just need to check out the social accounts for Sutton Arts Theatre to know that this is no ordinary amateur theatre setup - and tonight they open their latest play ‘The Curious Incident Of the Dog In The Night-Time’.
Yes, it has one of the longest titles in Theatreland but nothing about this Olivier and Tony award winning play will drag.
It’s suitable for ages 11+ and with family tickets priced at £40 for two adults and two children, this represents fantastic value.
Tickets are limited but there is still some availability - so if you fancy something different and want to support a fantastic local arts organisation then get yourself over to the website and book your tickets today.
Let’s try and make it a sell out.
FOOD, FOOD, FOOD
Sutton Coldfield’s Biggest Ever Food Festival
I have been known to get over-excited occasionally, but I’m hitting new levels today as I am absolutely bursting with excitement for this weekend - as we see the Sutton Coldfield Food Festival 2024 come to the Town Centre.
The free event kicks off with The Bracebridge head chef Darren Meachem at 10am on Saturday and features appearances from Phil Vickery, Molly Robbins and Glynn Purnell throughout Saturday and Sunday, with other local guests taking to the stage throughout the weekend.
And that’s not even the best bit, as there’s over 100 food and drinks stalls to choose from with everything from burgers to greek street food and from craft beers to delicious cocktails - there’s just too much to mention - believe me, you will not be disappointed.
There’s entertainment for the kids too with comedy stilt walkers, free face painting and glitter tattoos, balloon modelling, comedy waiters along with live music and family fun - it really does promise to be an incredible weekend.
Key Stage Times:
Phil Vickery - 12pm-12.45pm, 2pm-2.45pm BOTH DAYS
Glynn Purnell - 1pm-1.45pm and 3pm-3.45pm SUNDAY ONLY
Molly Robbins - 11am-11.30am, 3pm-3.30pm SATURDAY and 10.45-11.15am and 4pm-4.30pm SUNDAY
Personally, I’ll be on the lookout for Brummie Honey, Thainese and Redfearn Kitchen (Indonesian) - and I’m sure the kids will be looking forward to Slushzilla among the many other treat stalls.
Sorry I can’t mention them all - but for all the details and all the stalls check the link below.
When: Sat 10am-8pm & Sun 10am-5pm
Where: Sutton Coldfield Town Centre
GET INVOLVED
Sutton Park Run Every Saturday At 9AM
Did you know that every Saturday morning, dozens of people turn up in Sutton Park at 9am to take part in a 5k park run.
It’s totally free, open to all and you can choose to run, walk or even just turn up and watch. You do need to sign up (free) on the website so you have a scannable bar code (to ensure you get a result) and then meet at Boldmere Gate accessed from Monmouth Drive.
If you want to get involved and support but don’t fancy running, Park Run are also on the lookout for volunteers.
As well as appealing to competitive runners, it’s an inclusive and social event with lots of participants heading for a coffee in the Communitea Cafe on Boldmere Road afterwards.
Last week saw 461 runners completing the course - including two from Somerset who were up visiting family.
SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
The Best Oxymoron In Sutton Coldfield
The words ‘sushi’ and ‘bistro’ in their true meanings really do not go together - but all is forgiven when it comes to Sushi Bistro in Wylde Green - as the food is simply incroyablement 美味しい (that’s incredibly delicious to me and you).
I’m currently on a 75 day health kick which involves frankly ridiculous amounts of exercise and water - so finding simple pleasures is harder than usual.
So when my usual takeaway craving kicks in - where do I turn? Well, a couple of weeks ago I turned once again to Sushi Bistro for one of their lunchtime poke bowls.
It’s probably the 6th or 7th time I’ve had the Salmon Poke Bowl that comes with the most amazing seaweed, sushi rice, avocado, sweetcorn, lettuce and edamame beans - and every single time it has been sublime - topped with a sweet mango sauce (I usually opt out of the Japanese mayo that comes included).
It’s incredible value for money, the freshest sushi in the area (aside from Sushido) and they also offer a full sushi menu as well as party or catering set menus.
On a warm day (apparently next week is warming back up) there’s nothing better than sitting on the patio eating this for lunch (see pic above).
Check out the Sushi Bistro website here (Tip: on Deliveroo they go by the name Poke Bistro)

WHERE IN SUTTON
Where is this picture taken?
A tough one this week. You either know it or you don’t and depending on where you live in Sutton will make a big difference. Do you know where this picture was taken?
Hit us with your replies to this email with this week’s answer for the chance to feature next week.
Answer to last week: Lot’s of you enjoyed this one last week, but it was Denise Bonner who gave us the first correct answer - it was indeed taken from inside Miller and Carter overlooking Powell’s Pool.
Denise knew the spot well and even sent us this pic of her enjoying the view

So many of you tell me how you feel this newsletter fills part of the gap left by The Sutton Coldfield Observer - and that’s a huge compliment since we are currently just a team of two. We are not affiliated with or trying to be The Observer by any means, rather we want to celebrate all that is positive in the area and help promote local businesses.
But if you think there’s a feature we are missing, be sure to let us know. As we look to move from once to twice per week publications, we want to bring you the content that matters to you - so don’t be shy, hit reply and let me know (or leave a comment on the vote below - I read them all).
See you next Thursday…
Sincerely,
