SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
Supporting Current & Ex-Service Personnel In Sutton
Last week I heard from Keith Springett of the Royal British Legion Club on Rectory Road. He asked me if we could highlight this venue and today seems a fitting day to do just that.
The RBL for Sutton Coldfield is a vibrant community venue that welcomes everyone—no membership required. It’s known for its lively atmosphere, affordable drinks, and a diverse range of events that take place through the year.

The main function room comfortably holds up to 100 guests and boasts a spacious dance floor, a well-equipped stage, and ample seating. Whether you're attending a live music night, participating in a salsa class, or enjoying an open mic session, the club offers a welcoming environment for all.
Regular events include the popular Acoustic Guitar Club on the first Tuesday of each month and salsa classes every Wednesday evening. Additionally, the club hosts tribute acts and themed nights throughout the year, providing entertainment that caters to all - the next event being Rock The 80’s band - tickets available here for just £7 including booking fee.
They have a well stocked bar with a selection of beers, wines, and spirits, all at prices significantly lower than typical pubs, making it an ideal spot for a night out without breaking the bank.
Planning a special event? The function room is available for hire and comes complete with contacts for caterers, DJs, and decorators to help make your occasion memorable.
For more information on upcoming events or to inquire about room hire, visit www.therblsuttoncoldfieldltd.com or contact the club directly.
And thanks Keith for the kind words about our newsletter.
HEALTH
Free Heart Tests For Everyone Aged 14-35
Cardiac Risk In The Young are at Sutton Coldfield Town FC on Coles Lane in June where young people aged 14-35 can have a free heart test.
Last year 104 young people were screened, 3 of which were referred for further tests, potentially saving 3 lives. This year’s event is proving to be very popular already so early booking is highly recommend.

VE Day Remembrance at St. James’ Church Today
Will you join for a VE Day Remembrance at St. James’ Church, Mere Green today?
Today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, and St. James’ Church in Mere Green warmly invites the local community to a special day of remembrance and reflection.
The church will be open from 10.30am to 12 noon for morning coffee and displays of local WW2 research, including detailed records of men from the parish who gave their lives during the war. Midday prayers will be held at 12.15pm, and all are welcome to take part.
After a short break, the church will reopen from 2pm to 3pm, offering another chance to explore the research and connect with local history. At 6.30pm, the church bell will toll to mark this special event.
This is a free community event and a chance to honour those who served, reflect on the past, and connect with others in remembrance. You might even discover a family connection in the research shared on the day.
For more information, please contact the Church Centre office on 0121 716 8881 or email [email protected].

Gin Tasting At Leviathan
If you read my write up on the recent whisky tasting at Leviathan but are more of a gin lover - then I have something just for you.
On Saturday 31st May, my favourite local craft brewery is holding a gin tasting day where you can sample 6 boutique quality gins. You’ll be expertly led by Drew (who does actually look quite like the guy in the pic below - just taller) with tasting notes and BBQ inspired snacks.

There’s very limited space so contact Leviathan through their Instagram page to reserve your seat. It’s £35 per person and if the past tasting events are anything to go by it looks set to be a good one!

We are taking a break from Where In Sutton. Back next week with a new trivia feature. The answer to last week’s question below…

Last week’s answer was Plantsbrook Nature Reserve which we believe is right on the edge of Sutton as you head out of Walmley. No-one got that one last week, can you do better this week.
