It's Festival Season Across Sutton Coldfield

And the fastest growing sport expands again locally

WEATHER

Thurs: 16°C 🌤️ | Fri: 20°C ☀️ | Sat: 18°C 🌧️ | Sun: 17°C 🌤️

Good morning Royal Sutton Coldfield,

Welcome back to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that loves a festival.

Yes, festival season is upon us and if there’s one thing we love in Sutton Coldfield, it’s the chance to get some fresh air, enjoy some brilliant music and feast on good food and drink.

If that is your bag then you’re in luck this week as the much loved Sutton Coldfield Music Festival makes a return to Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club on Saturday followed by the country music festival on Sunday - check out our What’s On section for more details on that.

And if you haven’t had enough of the bank holidays yet, there’s one more for you on Monday - as well as it being half term for the kids next week - so we have an extra half term activities section for you in the newsletter this week.

There’s plenty going on across the region so let’s take a look…

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
Padel Haus - Fort Dunlop

Following my nasty ankle ligament injury a few months ago I’ve been cleared to play padel again by the physio - so I’ve taken the chance over the last few weeks to play a fair few games - taking full advantage of the Spring sunshine.

I usually play at Sutton Tennis Club (which is fantastic) but with resident concerns over noise and how hard it is to book an available slot I have tried out the new courts at Fort Dunlop and The Fort Shopping Centre.

The three courts at Fort Dunlop are a great addition to the local padel scene

They may be outside of Sutton but I thought they were worthy of a mention having played there a few times now and having spoken to the owner of Padel Haus - the company behind the new courts - I have to say he has smashed it (excuse the pun).

Daljit is clearly passionate about padel - which if you didn’t know is one of - if not the - fastest growing sport in the world right now. There are three courts at Fort Dunlop and one at The Fort on the car park - and what’s great about these is that they are away from residential areas - so noise is no issue.

Personally, I prefer the Fort Dunlop courts which seem in better condition, and with floodlights available Daljit told me he’s been running bookings up until 1am!

So if you are looking for a great place to play padel or even want to get some coaching and don’t want to upset local residents with the noise, why not check out this new facility just a stones throw from Sutton Coldfield.

And please don’t tell my physio how much game time I played over the last two weeks 😉

For more info head to the Padel Haus website here or book a court on the Playtomic app.

New Social Group for the Over-50s Launching in Streetly this June

A brand new social group for the over-50s is launching in June, offering people in and around Streetly the chance to meet new friends and enjoy fun, affordable days out.

Connections 50plus is the brainchild of local resident Christine Griffin, who previously founded the popular Friends R Us social group back in 1994. Starting with just eight members, that group grew to over 120 strong and ran successfully for nearly two decades.

Christine is now bringing back that winning format — one built around connection, shared interests and budget-friendly activities — with a modern twist that reflects today’s economic realities.

“If you're on your own a lot, feeling fed up or simply missing companionship, you’re not alone — and this group is for you,” says Christine. “We’ll focus on affordable outings, special offers, and shared experiences that bring people together.”

What to Expect:

  • Gentle walks followed by a meal in good company

  • Theatre trips, including local amateur productions

  • Coach day trips with local companies

  • Concerts and cinema nights, including the Music of Hans Zimmer and John Williams at Symphony Hall on Sunday 15th June at 3pm — with film scores from Star Wars, Harry Potter, ET, Indiana Jones, and more.

  • Fun days out: Think strawberry picking, 18-hole indoor putting, the Severn Valley Railway, or a visit to Birmingham’s Back to Backs.

  • Casual meet-ups for quizzes, coffee, garden centre visits, pub lunches, and whatever else members suggest!

Christine welcomes ideas and hopes the group becomes a warm, inclusive space for people to form lasting connections. Whether you're new to the area or simply looking to expand your social circle, Connections 50plus promises a friendly and relaxed way to get involved.

SUTTON SOLVER
Can you answer this Sutton Solver?

Can you answer the following question? If so, hit reply and give us your answer for the chance to feature next week:

Q: What archaeological activity in Sutton Coldfield revealed evidence of a Bronze Age burial mound, one of only two in Birmingham?

Was it A) A dig at Blackroot Pool B) Excavations near Fox Hollies C) Surveys for the M6 Toll road near Langley Brook

The correct answer to last week’s question was B - James Eustace Bagnall, a notable botanist who documented the plant life of Warwickshire, including Sutton Park, contributing significantly to regional natural history. Congrats to Angela Tooley from Walmley for getting it right first.

As the weather does its best this Bank Holiday weekend to remind us that it’s not actually summer yet I hope you don’t let the odd rain shower stop you from enjoying all the great events going on across the town.

Just a heads up too that we are going to be taking a 5 week break in the Summer so we’ll have some bumper editions in the lead up to that break and then of course come back with a bang, so if you have or know of any events taking place in late July to end of August please get them over to us before July 10th.

Have a great bank holiday weekend whatever you are doing.

Sincerely,
