Good morning Sutton Coldfield.

What do you get if you cross Shakespeare’s Verona with a 90’s pop classic?

The Sutton Insider newsletter of course - and more specifically - this edition of the Sutton Insider - and aren’t you glad to be here.

It doesn’t cease to amaze me how much is going on in our town and this week I’ve added a couple of new sections to the newsletter in response to the feedback from your wonderful suggestions.

So many of you gave us feedback last week with 99% of you giving us full marks for our content. I feel like I’m back at school - except I’m doing well 😃.

We’ve just passed 1300 subscribers - and this is only our fourth week - so thank you so much for reading and supporting all the positive things going on locally - and helping us with our aim of becoming the no.1 newsletter in Sutton.

Right. Enough waffle… I’ve got some real treats for you this week… let’s go!

LOCAL EVENTS
The Sutton Man Behind The Music

You might not know the name, but you’ll definitely recognise the music - and today at the Town Hall you can learn all about how it was created.

Born in Sutton Coldfield, David Lowe has worked the world over as a composer, arranger and producer on some of the most iconic and instantly recognisable pieces of music.

If I said to you ‘The One Show title song’ you will instantly have the music playing through your head, trumpeting ‘one’ repeatedly in a variety of high pitches - yes, that’s David’s.

Sorry - that’s in your head for the day now!

BBC News, Grand Designs, Countryfile, Panaroma and even the 1998 hit ‘Would you’ (you’ll know it when you hear it) are all David’s creations.

Tonight he is appearing at the town hall to share how he devised these pieces in a special fundraiser for the town hall itself.

There are still some tickets available so if you fancy something different, want to raise money for our local town hall and celebrate David’s incredible work then get booking. Tickets are £12.50.

When: Tonight 7-10pm

Where: Sutton Coldfield Town Hall

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
Verona Italian Restaurant

Friday saw the mercury levels rising as high as 29°C and so there was only one thing I could think of - and that was to have a bit of al fresco dining.

I’ve been waiting to visit Verona Italian in Boldmere for a while now - and spotting their frankly ridiculously low priced lunch time menu, I couldn’t resist.

Perched at our table hidden from the high street thanks to an array of lovely ‘real’ plants - for a moment there I was in Italy.

As Shakespeare wrote: “There is no world without Verona walls,
But purgatory, torture, hell itself.”

You’ll feel like that when you leave here because the food is ‘that’ good - to never have it again - would be pure torture.

Luckily for me and you, Verona is in Boldmere so we have no excuse not to return.

The lunch menu is £16.95 for two courses (the 3 course option seems to not be running any longer) and the choices are plentiful.

I opted for pan fried king prawns with garlic, chilli, white wine, tomato and cream sauce - this was the highlight for me and it oozed freshness!

My wife had the insalata caprese - again this was ‘bellissimo’

For mains we had the king prawn linguine and the chicken and bacon rigatoni. We scoffed the lot and were bursting at the seams as we left.

Rigatoni pasta with chicken and bacon - simply delish

If you’ve not yet been to Verona in Boldmere - what are you waiting for?

SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Come Dine With You?

Are 21 series’ of Come Dine With Me too many?

If you think not then fear not, as series 22 is coming soon - and you and your cooking skills could take centre stage as the casting director is looking for brummies.

For the purposes of this segment, we’ll take that to include Sutton - so if you are interested in hosting a dinner party with 4 strangers in the hope of winning their culinary approval and walking away with a cool £1000 - you can apply here.

Question Time
Sutton Solver

Each week we will have a question related to Sutton Coldfield. Let’s see how well you know your town. The answer will be revealed next week.

Q: Which Sutton Park pool is the largest?

Is it a) Blackroot b) Powell’s c) Bracebridge

Last week’s answer…

Q: What historical building in Sutton Coldfield was originally a medieval manor and hunting lodge and is now a popular wedding venue?

A: It was of course New Hall Manor, dating back to 1435 when the Earl Of Warwick used it as a hunting lodge. It is in fact one of the oldest inhabited moated houses in the world - and according to sutton-coldfield.net it is ‘the’ oldest.

Don’t forget to check out the last few live music events as the 40th Birmingham Jazz & Blues Festival comes to a close… and if you know someone who you think would enjoy this newsletter, please share it using the link below.
