Good morning Royal Sutton Coldfield,

Welcome back to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that wants you to write the newsletter for us.

That’s right, this week we are asking for your contributions to the Sutton Spotlight, so if you want to unleash your inner food critic or if you have a local store or group you want to shout about, now is your chance (more on that below).

In the week that saw the BBC filming in Sutton Park for what must now surely be close to season 97 of Silent Witness, we are gearing up for some milder weather events as Spring looks to truly kick in.

There’s plenty going on as always so let’s get in to it

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
We Want Your Sutton Spotlight

This week we are asking you to send us your local Sutton Spotlight. Each week we choose a local store, cafe, restaurant, community group or other local business to put in the spotlight.

As much as we get out and about across Sutton, it would be great to hear of your hidden or not so hidden gems that we haven’t featured yet.

One of our previous Sutton Spotlight’s at Cafe Verona in Boldmere

You can either just submit the name of the place, or ideally send us your mini review and tell us why you love the place so much (along with a pic if you have one).

You’ll get full credit if you want it and we think it’s a great way to promote those incredible local businesses we haven’t discovered or been able to feature yet.

Ideally the businesses will be independents rather than large chains.

Just send your submissions to [email protected] or by reply to this email.

Donate An Easter Egg & Make A Difference

Last year, Julie a member of the Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Forum, distributed Easter Eggs to The Aston Hotel in Witton, St. Anne's homeless shelter in Birmingham and had enough to also spread a little happiness to 2 multi-occupancy houses on Slade Road, Erdington.

This year she is asking for people to support her appeal again so that even more homeless people can share in a little bit of joy this Easter.

She asks, “When you are shopping, please buy an Easter Egg, and a small Easter card. If you have children, ask them to make a card... colour in pictures... but more importantly write a message and sign it. Putting a name to your gift makes it personal and I promise you, this act of kindness makes all the difference! Chocolate is very low on their priority list, and to get a personal message from a real person is priceless!”

She is collecting Easter eggs up until 16th April, in order to hand them out on Easter Day, which is Sunday 20th April this year. If you can and would like to help with this appeal you can join the Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Forum here and get in contact.

LOCAL HEROES
Local Firm Achieves Platinum Award For Sustainability

Last week our local heroes section was very much focused on the past. This week it is all about the future, and in particular, a nod to one local company that has been working hard to achieve 100% sustainability.

Ian Hazel Funerals has done just that, and in doing so has become the first company nationally to achieve the Platinum Award for Sustainability with a 100% score.

lan Hazel told us:

“Despite all our environmentally friendly features, reaching Platinum Level was not guaranteed - let alone achieve the 100% score. We have had to look very hard at a lot of our policies and practices and think "outside the box" to ensure we are running the company in the best environmentally way possible. We have now introduced our first all-electric Ambulance, and this is supported by three other hybrid vehicles.  Whilst our main funeral fleet are presently petrol/diesel based, we are looking to the future when they can become all electric, as suitable vehicle become available.

This scheme has made us think about many things we used to take for granted. We now ensure engines are not left idling when stationery, clients are made aware of all the Eco-Friendly options that can be used, from coffins to burial grounds. Room thermostats are turned down to a more economical level.  We are more conscious about recycling items, and our impact upon the local community.“

On March 12th Brendan and Carolyn Day, founders of the Greener Globe Funeral Standards attended the Head Office of lan Hazel Funerals in Four Oaks to present the company with its Platinum Award Plaque, and Andrew Mitchell was also in attendance, to show his support.

What a fantastic effort and achievement from all involved.

SUTTON SOLVER
Where In Sutton?

Do you know exactly where in Sutton the image below was taken? Simply hit reply and tell us for a chance to have a mention in next week’s email.

Last week’s answer: Lots of you thought the image was of New Hall, which in fact was incorrect
the correct answer came in first from Laurence Bonner who emailed to say it was ‘the aforementioned St Mary's College’ - well done Laurence.

I want to finish this week by saying a huge shoutout to the brilliant team at Good Hope Hospital - and especially those who ended up treating me at A&E on Thursday morning last week.

I was in and out in 40 minutes (and that included an x-ray) and the staff there are delightful. Now to try and rest my foot after a nasty injury while playing mixed netball last week.

Luckily I don’t need feet to write this email. See you next week.

Sincerely,
