Good morning Sutton Coldfield,

Welcome back to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that tells you which 400 year old play features our royal town.

Generally, this newsletter is all about spreading positivity and sharing what’s great about Sutton, but it’s been a tough couple of weeks with mindless criminal activities taking place - and all this coming at a time when the town centre police station is being sold off.

So some welcome news from West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster this week, as he announced measures that would be put in place before and after the closure.

It’s been met with a mixed response but includes the following:

  • Public contact office in the town centre

  • Neighbourhood teams in the town centre

  • Response teams in the town centre

  • New station opened before the former is sold

  • Money from sale re-invested into West Midlands Police

This all sounds good, but to really put minds at rest we need details. Hopefully they will come soon enough and the unrest of the last couple of weeks will be dealt with swiftly and severely.

On to the good stuff now, and there’s plenty of it this week with it being a bank holiday weekend - so let’s get in to it…

GET INVOLVED
Free Disability Golf Taster At Walmley Golf Club

Walmley Golf Club have been championing access to golf for all and earlier this year launched the UK’s fist disability designed putting green and short game practice area.

Since then, they have been celebrated for leading the way in making golf accessible for all - with the likes of Ellie Perks and England Golf praising the work of the club with supporting partners in bringing this facility to the area.

On Tuesday they have a free disability golf taster day with various time slots available throughout the day for people of all ages - no experience needed.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone who has a disability that impacts their mobility and access to sport and would like to get involved…

When: Tues 27th August

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
XO Lounge - Your New Favourite Bar?

Recently a friend of mine had a big birthday celebration and it just so happened to be at XO Lounge, located right opposite Sutton Park near to Streetly Gate on Thornhill Road. I soon discovered why this place is a hit with the locals, and why it’s worth a visit from further afield.

Chris and Lee who co-own the wine bar are actually cousins of my friend, and are all round great guys - they also clearly know how to create a great bar with a great atmosphere and even better service - the Google reviews say it all!

One of the (many) things I have been known to complain about is why UK bars don’t ofter table service. Well at XO Lounge they have that covered, with drinks and food orders taken at your table by the friendly staff.

They also have self serve wine and beer machines, the like that are usually reserved for swanky city centre locations. They weren’t working when I was in, but I’ve been told they usually work a treat and mean you get a wider selection of drinks than you otherwise would.

The food and drinks we had were up there with the best of Sutton, and although the food menu is limited, I usually prefer that, as it means what is on the menu is fresh and high quality.

If you’re in the area I’d highly recommend you give XO Lounge a try.

NEW OPENING
Silver Tree Coming To Mere Green & Town Centre

By the time this email hits your inbox this news has probably passed your social media feeds several times - but it’s too good not to mention… yes, the incredible Silver Tree Bakery is coming to Sutton Coldfield Town Centre with a pop-up at Gracechurch Shopping Centre every Friday, Saturday and Sunday - ideal for those weekend treats and the grand opening is this weekend!

My wife (who I would declare as an aficionado in bakery goods) swears by Silver Tree so it’s great to see it come to the town centre.

But that’s not all - and this part you might not have heard about yet: Silver Tree is also coming to the newly opened Harvest Hut at Harvest Fields Centre in Mere Green.

The Harvest Hut (pictured above) will be selling Silver Tree cakes and pastries Monday-Saturday 8.30am-4.30pm - and if like me you’re currently cutting back on the calories, why not just head over for a coffee and support the Harvest Hut in their first few weeks of opening.

They are a friendly bunch, the prices are good value and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

LOOKING AHEAD
Christmas Markets Coming To Sutton

It may be August Bank Holiday Weekend but who doesn’t love a bit of Christmas news… and this is so exciting we just had to mention it!

This year will see Sutton Coldfield get its first ever Christmas Market with wooden chalet styled stalls selling Christmas gifts, food and drinks.

It looks set to run from November 28th to December 22nd and will give a seasonal boost to businesses in the town centre and means local residents no longer need to trek in to the city to visit the increasingly busy German Market to get their festive kicks.

It’s been organised by Sutton Coldfield BID and LSD Promotions and I for one cannot wait to see what it has to offer and hear those Sutton sleigh bells ring.

Question Time
Sutton Solver

Each week we will have a question related to Sutton Coldfield. Let’s see how well you know your town. The answer will be revealed next week.

Q: Sutton Coldfield Town Hall was built in 1852, but how much did it cost to build?

Is it a) £4,400 b) £995 c) £15,300

Last week’s answer…

Q: Which of Shakespeare’s plays features a line that mentions Sutton Coldfield?

A: Another fascinating question this was - the answer was Henry IV Part I when Falstaff says "Bardolph, get thee before to Coventry; fill me a
bottle of sack: our soldiers shall march through;
we'll to Sutton Co'fil' tonight.”

Over the next few months you will see some changes to the Sutton Insider newsletter. There’s so much going on we can’t fit it all in to one email. So we are going to be moving to two emails per week.

In order to help with this growth we need to grow our team and so we are on the lookout for someone who loves Sutton and is often ‘out and about’ in the area to help with collating and writing content for the newsletter on a freelance or part time capacity.

If you are interested or know someone who is then please get in touch via reply to this email and I’ll send further details.

I hope you have a lovely bank holiday weekend and manage to spend at least some of it with family and friends.

For those of you or your family members who are collecting GCSE results today - good luck.

See you next Thursday…

Sincerely,
