Good morning Royal Sutton Coldfield,

Welcome back to the only Sutton Coldfield newsletter that loses track of the days around bank holidays.

Wednesday is the day where I sit down for a good few hours and make sure everything is where it should be in the newsletter you are reading now, adding the Sutton Spotlight, proof reading and editing and then adding in our sponsored post. That almost didn’t happen this week! I don’t know about you, but with so many bank holidays happening in the space of 6 weeks - it almost caught me out… but I’m here, so are you - and hopefully this edition is error free (as error free as usual at least) and has some content for you to enjoy with a cuppa.

This week you might spot the link between the Sutton Spotlight and the sponsored post - which will bring back a one week special of the Sutton Solver - so if you do spot the link, let us know.

With regards to the sponsored post - it’s an event I’ve attended in the past and it really is a great one for adults, families, everyone to be quite honest - but no doubt being another bank holiday it will mess up the days of the week in my head again!

Plenty going on this week so let’s get in to it…

SUTTON SPOTLIGHT
Have A Whale Of A Time At Leviathan

Leviathan has made our Sutton Spotlight before - back when we only had about 900 people reading the newsletter. So after my visit last week to their now infamous whisky tasting (at least it’s infamous in my circles) I thought the Reddicap Trading estate tap room was worthy of another shout.

Speaking of infamy, you’d be forgiven for knowing nothing about it. Although it’s been going since 2019, Leviathan might well be Sutton Coldfield’s best kept secret when it comes to craft beer.

What started out as a small batch craft brewery has now become a fully functioning tap room with up to 14 craft beers and ciders on tap as well as cans and bottles.

The craft brewery that is named after a Mastodon album (and its original meaning being ‘sea monster’ or ‘whale’) is located on the Reddicap Trading Estate in Sutton, has a focus on using high quality, natural ingredients and is one of the most unique independent drinking spots in the town.

They often do collaborations with independent food companies so it’s well worth keeping tabs on what they’re up to on their Instagram page.

The whisky tasting I attended on Thursday was a lot of fun. If you were there, I was the non-Greek person on the table of rowdy Greeks playing games - they loved my game of Fives and I loved their game of Tongues (ask me if you see me). Drew was our host, and as always he took us through a great selection of 6 whiskies, and even brought out some traditional fare in the way of ham and cheese ‘cobs’ and locally sourced pork pie. What could be better - all for the sum of £35!

Leviathan is open Thursday to Sunday and opening hours vary, so check their website for times. As ever, our independents need your support so if you like craft beer or cider and want to support a great local business, get yourself down there.

New Website Documents Local Men Who Died At War

Thank you to Yvonne Moore who has been in touch to tell us of a project she’s been working on to help document and commemorate the men listed on the Sutton Coldfield War Memorial who died during the Great War.

Research began in 2013 and they have recently updated their research and last week launched a website where their findings are displayed.

You can browse all the names in an A-Z style and the level of detail for some of them is astounding.

If you are interested in finding out more then visit the website https://www.royalsuttoncoldfieldgreatwarproject.co.uk

What a fantastic local resource - thank you to all involved.

SUTTON SOLVER
For One Week Only - Sutton Solver Returns

Can you answer the following question? If so, hit reply and give us the answer for a chance to feature next week.

Q. What is the link between the Sutton Spotlight and the top sponsored post?

Last weeks answer proved too difficult but we did have some noble guesses. The correct answer is near to the car park for the Bracebridge. It stands alone, is a great climbing tree and is distinguished by a fairy door entrance.

As my confusion settles over the days of the week, this newsletter has left me confused on another matter… which is better, cobs on the bar or gastro style pubs? I might need a week to figure that one out.

Remember, if you have a great local experience to share, please send it in by reply to this email or tag us on Instagram here.

Sincerely,
